Finding Magic in an Acorn with Joan Sommers

Designer, author, and educator Joan Sommers will introduce (or reintroduce) us to the magical boxes of Joseph Cornell (1903-1972). Focusing on his habitat series of boxes—where natural materials, along with found objects and images, are arranged to create visual poetry—participants will play with juxtaposing the natural and man-made, focusing on symbolic, metaphorical, or emotional connections. That process will lead to creating small assemblages using thoughtfully gathered natural materials from the Langlais Art Preserve and objects provided from an overflowing attic.

About Joan: Joan Sommers (she/her) is a graphic designer and educator who co-authored The Joseph Cornell Box: Found Objects: Magical Worlds and has led workshops based on his work. She lives in Cushing.

Watershed Workshops have a pay what you can ($5+) registration fee, to help offset materials costs. If this fee is a barrier, please get in touch with us at langlais@grlt.org—we want everyone who is interested to be able to participate.
