Barn Studio

Extend your visit to the art environment with some creative exploration of your own.

New in summer 2024, the Langlais Barn will be transformed into a community studio for nature-inspired art making. People of all ages are welcome to play and experiment with materials and open-ended projects inspired by the art, ecology, and wildlife at the Preserve. Projects change every few weeks with new materials and prompts to try. After you finish your project, you may take your artwork with you or leave it for others to see.

Langlais Workshop

The Langlais Workshop contains selected artworks by the artist, as well as his tools, art materials, and ephemera. You’ll discover something new every time you visit.

At Blackie’s, 1977

Cushing-based artist Melanie Essex spent many summer days at the Langlais farm as a child. Her parents, painters John Wissemann and Nancy Wissemann-Widrig, were close friends of the Langlaises. On a breezy summer day in 1977, she tried out her new Super8 camera over “at Blackie’s.” Her impressionistic film, shot just months before Langlais’s death, has turned out to be the most comprehensive documentation of his art environment as it looked during his lifetime.

Rediscovered in 2010, this 13-minute film is now screening in the Barn, made possible by a grant from the Wyeth Foundation for American Art.
